UNESCO calls the Semmering "one of the greatest feats of civil engineering from this pioneering phase of railway building". Its 41 km have 14 tunnels, 16 viaducts and over 100 stone bridges, built from 1848 to 1854 by some 20,000 workers under Carl von Ghega, an engineer born in Venice, at the other end of this route (UNESCO, Wikipedia). The line has been in use ever since. Once the Semmering Base Tunnel opens, fast trains will take the tunnel and the old line will remain as the scenic way over.

“An epic daytime ride through great scenery.”
